Dear Parents,

Welcome to all of you -- families returning to St. Michael's and families new to our school. I'm looking forward to a wonderful year of learning and growing with your children!

In first grade, the children will grow in their reading, writing, speaking, listening, reasoning and critical thinking skills. While learning the basics of academic subjects, your children will also be building good study skills and work habits.

There are some classroom routines that you'll want to know about. Each day, the children will have a small, mid-morning snack. Please send something healthy, such as cut-up vegetables, fruit, crackers, cheese, yogurt, etc., along with a drink. If your child has any food allergies, please let me know in writing.

Each day, your child will be bringing home the "Home-School Communication Folder." On one side will be that day's homework; on the other side will be notes, corrected homework and classwork completed that day. Please check this each day, and take out all finished work. Your child will need four other plain pocket folders - 1 for class and 1 each for Library, Spanish and Computer. When a folder becomes torn or worn, please replace it with a new one.

For our service project, the first graders will be collecting used glasses and sunglasses in October. "Lenscrafters" will clean, repair, and deliver the used glasses to the needy both here and in other countries. In their small way, the children are showing their care and concern for the poor - one of the seven Catholic social principles.

If you have any questions or concerns, you may send a note or call, and I'll answer as soon as possible. Looking forward to a great year with you and your children ...

Sincerely,

Mrs. Hernon
